Simply put, avoid too much water use in a short period of time.   If your septic system is “older” and thus smaller, water use and conservation becomes even more important.  Spread water use out over the day, particularly laundry and bathtub use, install low flush toilets, low flow shower heads. Septic Care Tips -

Do Not flush feminine hygiene products or wipes of any sort - no matter what the package says. Wet wipes, baby or adult, paper towel, diapers or other products should never go down the drain, even if the package indicates flushable.  They are likely to cause blockages at the tank inlet or outlet and potentially cause septic tank overflow - yuck that’s a bad day!  So.... Toilet paper only please!
