Septic System Tip: Renting out your paradise?
It is important to know your septic system limits. With the increase in popularity of AirBnB and the like, many people are opting to rent their cottages or cabins. Two people per bedroom is what most septic systems were designed for. Overusing your septic system can cause back-ups, septic system failure and lake pollution. Not to mention unhappy renters! Septic System Tip: Scrape the Plates!
Skip the Kitchen Sink Garbage Disposal (often called a Garburator) & Scrape the Plates! Excess organics are an absolute no-no for septic systems. Ground up vegetables and other organics are difficult for bacteria to breakdown. This excess will overburden the system, cause frequent pump-outs, odours, blockages and system failure. So scrape the plates (ideally into a compost bin) and save your septic. Would you like a monthly septic maintenance reminder delivered to your inbox? Septic Care Tip: Never use chemical drain openers.
Many chemical drain openers are made of highly caustic chemicals, (sodium hydroxide) which “burn” a hole through the blockage, these products can physically damage plumbing and have a very negative effect on the vital biological treatment going on within the septic tank. Bacteriological drain cleaners, such as EcoEthic Septic & Drain Treatment, are both effective at cleaning the drain and beneficial to your septic system. Use a natural choice whenever possible.
